So, in our last installment we discussed one of the versions of St. Nicholas, the Greek. The other version I alluded to says that St. Nicholas may have wound up in Germany and worked his way over to the Netherlands to become “Sinterklaas”. Flying reindeer might have had something to do with turn-of-the-century Byzantine travel from Rome to wherever, who knows. The fat, jolly bearded guy, yes, in the fuzzy suit, didn’t make the folklore books until around 1823 when Clement Clark Moore wrote his now famous poem, “A visit from St. Nicholas” and a cartoon drawing by the famous political cartoonist of the time, Thomas Nast.
